Quick Overview

Digital Hydrometer measures specific gravity and is designed for stationary battery testing. The range is optimized to measure the specific gravity of sulfuric lead-acid battery fluid. This digital hydrometer is the quickest and most efficient way to maintain and ensure optimally charged industrial storage battery banks. The digital hydrometer measures a range from 1.000 to 1.3000 specific gravity (s.g.). Compares to SBS-2002.

Digital hydrometer allows a quick and easy determination of specific gravity of sulfuric acid in batteries
Specific gravity measurements best identify failing battery cells compared to voltage testing, which only shows the float charge
The digital hydrometer also displays either concentration of ethylene glycol (%), freezing temp of ethylene glycol    (°C), or temp of sample cell (°C)
For measuring concentration of antifreeze solution used for central heating system...as a part of equipment, solution control
Ideal for measuring the condition of antifreeze solution for vehicle radiators
Perfect for measuring specific gravity of battery fluid (dilute sulfuric acid) in utility, telecommunication and switch gear stationary battery testing
Specific Gravity: Accuracy of ±0.005 units-500% faster than conventional sightglass methods
Battery fluid samples pumped through the digital hydrometer sample hose and nozzle to sample chamber where measurements are taken. Gasket ensures a liquid-tight seal
Waterproof membrane keypad     • Automatically temperature compensated to 77°F
No need to wipe down sample prism     • Measurement with one touch of a switch

STORAGE BATTERY TESTING WITH A DIGITAL HYDROMETER

Checking a storage battery (lead-acid) for its condition of charge or discharge is most efficiently done with a digital hydrometer measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte. A specific gravity reading between 1.275 and 1.300 indicates a full-charge condition. A reading of 1.250 indicates that the battery is half charged and a reading of 1.175 is indicative of full discharge. Since the acids (electrolyte) can differ from battery to battery, specific gravity readings may differ. But a good rule of thumb is to recharge batteries after a decrease in specific gravity reading of 0.100 from the reading at full-charge condition. The digital hydrometer is the fastest and most cost-effective solution for peak performance. Hydrometer readings should not vary more than .05 differences between cells.

1.4 SPECIFIC GRAVITY READINGS (Most effectively taken with a digital hydrometer)
Specific gravity readings of vented lead-acid batteries must be taken in accordance with the following instructions. Note: All specific gravity readings must be corrected to 77EF before recording (see 2.18). Do not attempt to take any specific gravity reading after adding water to a cell. The electrolyte takes several hours to mix after water is added.
A. Monthly
Take the specific gravity reading of the pilot cell and record it on form POM133A.
B. Quarterly
Take specific gravity readings of 10 percent of the total number of cells and record them on form POM-133A. Rotate these cells so that readings are taken on different cells each quarter.
C. Annually
Take specific gravity readings of every cell and record them on form POM133A.
D. After Equalizing Charge
About 15 minutes after heavy gassing stops, take the specific gravity readings of every cell and record them on form POM-133A. If two cells with the lowest specific gravity (checked over the last one-eighth of the charging period) have not stopped rising, continue the equalizing charge.
